A few months back I wrote a post about Radu‘s book of pictures from all over Romania. Initially I wanted it to be longer (the post I mean), but after we finished the project I was kind of exhausted and not really in the mood for story telling. Well, seeing as how holidays can be the most boring of events in life, I’ve decided to update that post, with a few pictures and thoughts about that prolific moment.

We were on a deadline. The publisher needed the book fast and Radu didn’t exactly feel good about the first draft of the book he did a while back, so step by step we changed it, starting with some of the pictures in it, then with the layout, the text, the order… until we pretty much changed the whole book except for the cover and print size.

I scanned a lot of negatives, I think somewhere around 180 slides, which is double the amount of the pictures in the book and it took working non-stop and learning a lot of new things and handling everything with great care, but man was it fun! The Nikon software had glitches sometimes and it would mess up the picture, other times the film wouldn’t stay flat in the scanner and the scan would come out blurry, but I somehow managed to get through all those problems and make the most of it.

We had a lot of fun those two weeks, we talked a lot, even disagreed a few times in regards to the selection of the shots but in retrospective, I think for both me and Radu this was one of the biggest challenges and maybe one of the biggest accomplishments altogether of 2009. We made a book! :)

Stiu ca am fost absent ultimele doua saptamani, dar am avut si motive reale. L-am ajutat pe Radu cu cartea lui despre Romania si cu expozitia pe care urmeaza sa o verniseze pe 16 noiembrie la Clubul Taranului in Bucuresti. O sa revin cu detalii despre expozitie peste cateva zile pentru cei interesati. Everybody is welcome, of course!

Cartea! Cartea este intitulata 45N27E si contine 100 de pagini cu fotografii din Romania, mai exact, un pic de Delta, Maramures, Bucovina, Vulcanii Noroiosi si altele. Am muncit in jur de doua saptamani la scanat de negative, selectie, prelucrare, layout, text, etc. Am baut mult Trapiche, am fumat mult Van Nelle, am invatat si InDesign…

Au fost doua saptamani lungi si obositoare, dar au fost doua saptamani pe care n-am cum sa le uit, doua saptamani care raman undeva in suflet si un produs finit superb care sa ne aduca aminte de ele.

In ultima vreme tot cochetam cu ideea de a ma muta din Timisoara, mai exact cochetam cu ideea de a ma muta la Bucuresti, doar ca am ajuns la concluzia ca nu prea se merita. Adica e misto in Bucuresti, mie unul mi-a placut, se misca lucrurile ceva mai repede, oamenii sunt mai lejeri, mai destupati la minte, etc… dar daca stai sa pui in balanta diferentele dintre Timisoara si Bucuresti nu e discrepanta chiar asa semnificativa incat sa merite sa te muti acolo.

Cu alte cuvinte, daca e sa te muti mai bine te muti direct afara, din punctul meu de vedere ai avea mai mult de castigat si mai repede. Bucurestiul e interesant, dar din pacate e tot in Romania, unde la modul general lucrurile merg ca dracu’. Pe langa asta, se pare ca eu nici nu prea sunt construit sa stau departe de casa multa vreme… adica… mi-e cam dor asa de oamenii si lucrurile de p-aici, asa ca m-am decis sa stau pe curu’ meu deocamdata si sa ma pun mai serios pe treaba pentru ca mi-am dat seama ca daca persisti cu adevarat si muncesti iti iese oriunde.

Zicea Alex la un moment dat zilele astea ca eu de fapt mai mult pozez ca fotograf decat pozez propriu-zis si cam avea dreptate…
