The Beatles vs. Dostoyevsky

June 26th, 2009 Posted in Aberatii

What is with people and preconceptions? I mean come the fuck on. I wanna talk about two recent arguments: The Beatles and Dostoyevsky. And yes, I know some of you are going “Oh shit… again!?”

Anyway… why do I have to automatically like something because a lot of other people do too?

Take The Beatles for example… highly overrated. I think they’re a piss-poor excuse for a band. They play stupid whoopty-fucking-doo songs for hillbillies. The only real talent in the band was Lennon, of course, who in my opinion made it by himself better then he ever did with the band. (too bad he fucked it all up with Yoko Loko later on…). Anyway, Alecu made a great point at the Irish Pub a week ago, by saying they were trend-setters back in the 60′s. They were new, edgy, people fell for it. I get it and I totally agree!

But Today. Now. June 26th 2009… The Beatles suck!

The other great preconception of “all times” (as I recently discovered) is that if you don’t like the works of the russian writer Dostoyevsky, you’re pretty much a redneck…

“Ohhh… well he’s a russian classic, you have to like his works!” Why do I have to like a suicidal type writer with heavy morbid tendencies? Why do I have to find it wonderful to read about feverishly dramatized scenes? Why do I have to like overly scandalous characters?

Don’t get me wrong, I respect his immense contribution to the world as well as his formidable achievements, but I don’t need him shoved down my throat on any account!

I’ll pick my own winners, thank you…

Fyodor Mikhaylovich Dostoyevsky – sometimes transliterated Dostoevsky, Dostoievsky, Dostojevskij, Dostoevski or Dostoevskii.
Dostoievski is actually the romanian transliteration, but as I wrote my post in english, I choose the english version of his name.
    Thanks for dropping by, Ana-Maria.

clearly I’m not up to date with the trend anymore. :) Is F.M. Dostoyevsky popular amongst the generations today?- cause that would imply that they actually still take the time to read a book longer than a couple of hundred pages! or, that they actually seek to discover in books something other than the simplified new-age philosophy of coehlo and the likes.
Agreed, The Beatles are way overrated. But one could probably say the same about Pink Floyd. :) Agreed, J. Fowles is good. But F.M.D. is without a doubt a great writer! ;) Not to mention, the creator of so many archetypal characters in the universal and timeless literature!

Honestly, I’d be thrilled to know that our generation and the younger ones still read and get to form an opinion on their own about literature.

I wouldn’t know about the generations today, but my guess is they don’t read anymore. It’s easier for them to go online and search for information.
One could say anything is overrated and one’s opinion should be taken into consideration nonetheless. Ignorance is not an option. :)
Also, I’m not disputing Dostoyevsky’s writing capacities, as I said I respect his work, but I prefer to have my own choices, rather then have other people’s choices shoved down my throat.
It’s interesting how I’m considered one of the “younger ones”. :))
Thanks for dropping by, Claudia. :)
